is it worth it...

Fri Apr 24, 2009, 9:52 PM
to live in a place where my art, the thing I love best in my life, my art is not accepted as the norm? And I'm NOT going to ask what is normal. You all know I make 3d figures, some are very toy-like though they aren't to be played with by children and my newer pieces are mixed media sculpts... Well, so many people have commented lately and the past two years that the characters are "hellish" or demonic.... I know it's funny, being that my inspiration and theme is usually a fairytale or nursery rhyme... Most of us know or have heard the fairytales were originally stories adults told to one another, these are the ones I'm attracted to, the scary original tales..

So here's my conundrum, I want to hold art shows. This is a very biased and religious community, a backward and strange town that I can't help but love it here. Will I eventually be run out of town with torches and pitchforks. Will people continue to think my work is "devilish". I know it's hilarious! But at this point for me, it's a fight and I want ART to win.

Just yesterday a sweet looking lady described one of the little elf/fairy figures as having horns. The horns she was referring to are actually the pointy ears the a lot of my pieces have. No where in the world are my figures criticised as they are here in my home town. And I have sold them all over the world and for many years....

I want to bring culture to this town, but if people keep thinking the way they do now, nothing will change. I want the artists of this place to come out of the woodwork and join me in this struggle. If we're ever to get out of this rut we'll have to stick together.

Join me at the Rogue Artists Meeting Saturday May 2nd at my home, contact me for information. I have a place downtown for an art show! Join us in the planning....

I feel for you my friend...maybe one day the rest of the country will be as open minded as they are here in California...best of luck to you :)

I can really sympathize! I live in the South and I DO frequently put horns on my fairies...oh man I've heard that they are devils a million times. I just smile and say "some people have equated fairies with devils in the past, but we know better now." This seems to confuse them..:giggle:

What a conundrum.

Me a few years back, would fight it to the death. Me now, would pack up and move.

Soooooo don't beat your head into that wall so long it depresses you!

i do love the confused looks on people's faces when explaining things to them.

sigh.... But even my painter friends get their paintings turned away, usually because it's a nude.... Oh well, I'm changing things or they will "burn me at the stake" lol!

It's worth it just to see the look on people's faces... in a place where the simplest nude painting is looked upon as something dirty.... sigh...

I'm having fun with it since I've found friends that want to change the art scene as well as I do.

conundrum... I just love that word and HAD to use it!

Right now I'm having fun with it. It's not just my artwork that's in question, but painters and some of the best artists I know are being turned down because the one art gallery in town doesn't accept nudity or anthing that may cause someone to think... arg.

Yes, I AM having fun with this...

You are kidding...people think your work is "Hellish"? I see nothing of the sort in your work. I think they are beautiful and fanciful, a fairyworld we wish to catch a glimpse of, not evil!

Well, you know how I worry about my latest work being accepted at the art walk...the sad think is, I am more proud of these than the others.

I do worry about my artwork being seen by someone I work for that doesn't approve and it might get me some negative attention. But, I have thought this over and I would rather do my art and defend it to the death instead of drawing cabins on sawblades, bowls of fruit and pretty landscapes. They may be acceptable around here but they have no vision and they say nothing.

The Rogues will hang together and we will make a statement. I will be there as usual!

The more someone is exposed to art the more they appreciate it. Yay you!

If you are able to change the way people see things...well that's kind of what art is all about, right? More power to you!
